'I hate my acting'

In conversation with Parthiepan

Parthiepan, who’s kicked at how well Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam (KTVI) has done, talks about his upcoming cameos in Suriya and Dhanush’s upcoming projects.

Some of your previous films haven’t quite tasted success.

Every filmmaker wants his film to be special in some way. Despite all hard work, when a film fails, it certainly hurts, but that doesn’t stop me there. I ignore these things when I do a new film. At least I pretend to! These days you don’t see me chasing/beating goons, unlike my previous films. Don’t you think I am learning? (Laughs)

You play the lead role in most of your films. But KTVI was an exception.

Direction has always been my passion. It was a conscious decision not to act in this film. But so far, I have taken up roles only which have suited me.

Your take on adaptations.

I am not into adaptations. But I am all ears if someone approaches me to act in theirs.

So acting is still a priority?

I’m a part of Venkat Prabhu-Suriya’s Mass-u and also Vetrimaran-Dhanush’s Soodhadi. I have signed a Kannada film Dada and this is my first debut in Sandalwood! Besides, I am directing a film in Malayalam, which will trace the relationship between a husband and wife called Wi-fi Alla Wife.

Has the audience changed?

These days, all that matters to the audience, is an engaging package of the story. Filmmakers can no longer cheat them with emotional drama or sentiment. Audiences need variety. Times are changing and it’s good. Any change for good can’t be bad, can it? (Smiles)

Is there a script you’re hoping to do someday?

I would love to make a film with no compromises someday. But I am quite sure it’s not going to be easy!  In fact, the days I act for the audience are the days I hate my acting.
