'Kamal Haasan is the best onscreen kisser'

Ahead of Int’l Kissing Day, which falls on July 6, I catch up with celebrities to find out their take on onscreen kisses

Vijay Antony

Kamal Haasan makes the best kisser ever. Anything he does, for that matter! Honestly, I haven’t seen any other actor doing such scenes beautifully. Kissing isn’t an easy thing and I remember him discussing how tough it is to make kissing look perfect onscreen, in an interview. Present day actors should learn from him. Audiences will not get the feel unless both actors enjoy kissing really. I will not hesitate to have lip lock scenes in my films.

Favourite onscreen kiss: Sathya (Valaiyosai Kalakala)

Cinema is a powerful medium whose reach is high. Whatever we do in movies tends to impact the youth to a large extent. In recent times, filmmakers undergo a lot of pressure to make decent movies because of strict censor rules. Ultimately, everyone blames cinema when rape cases or some harassment get reported.  Actors hardly get scope to perform anything creative or different. Filmmakers are narrow-minded, but the system is rigid.

Doctors say a passionate kiss lowers cholesterol levels, reduces stress, burns calories and no wonder, kissing is good for the heart. I haven’t had any intense lip lock scene in my films so far (smiles)

Favourite onscreen kiss: Suriya (Kaakha Kaakha, Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, Vaaranam Aayiram)

Premgi Amaren

There’s none to  match Kamal Haasan when it comes to the best onscreen kiss. When he does such scenes, kissing appears more beautiful. During 70s and 80s, Tamil cinema had a lot of glamorous actors performing intimate scenes, but that time the audiences weren’t open minded to accept them. Now, audiences have become open-minded, but not many filmmakers or actors perform such close scenes because of censorship and tax exemption issues.

Favourite onscreen kiss: Kamal Haasan’s Vikram (Parachute scene)

Arulnidhi Tamilarasu

I don’t like to kiss somebody for the sake of it. So far, I haven’t had any kissing scene in my movies and I don’t want to do it in future also. Now, I’m a bachelor, so I don’t mind kissing the heroine’s cheeks, if the script really demands one. But after I am married, I would kiss only my wife. Yes, I am possessive. (Grins)

Favourite onscreen kiss: Vinnaithandi Varuvaya

These days, directors mostly make movies targeting the rural folk and ‘family audiences’. They have started restricting the number of kissing scenes.

Nowadays, there’s no emotional connect between actors when they kiss onscreen. It has become more of a physical expression. The emotional bond is very important, so that it makes the audiences believe it’s real.

R Parthiepan

Why do we need a separate day to celebrate kissing? Kissing is beyond lip locks and it’s all about sheer chemistry. His piercing eyes should meet hers simply and everything just stops right there. I feel in Hollywood movies, kissing scenes are shot really well because of the comfort level the actors share onscreen. Again, that’s because of their culture and way of living. And I don’t understand why there is so much fuss about a lip lock. Lips and cheeks belong to the same person and what’s the logic in saying that it’s okay if a person kisses on the cheeks and wrong if it’s on the lips. This mindset should change.

Favourite onscreen kiss: Mahanadi
