Am definitely getting better with every film: GV Prakash

Remember the kid who sang the opening lines of Chikku Bukku Raile (Gentleman; 1993) and Kuchi Kuchi Raakkama (Bombay; 1995?) It was GV Prakash, who probably had no idea he’d be shaking a leg or two with other stars in a film. After composing music for over 50 films, he has been testing his luck as an actor, which seems to be working in his favour. “Though I was a successful composer, initially, I was not sure if I could ace acting, but I am glad I have become a successful performer over a period of time.”

Awaiting the release of Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru this Thursday, he tells, “Thursdays are auspicious for me. I had my earlier two releases on Thursdays, and it proved to be a hit.” The music director-actor says he watches films from the audience point of view and delves into his character. “I am just trying to be an entertainer and irrespective of the genre I choose, I want to be a part of films that people can connect to,” he explains.

Prakash says no film can survive just with big names and banners. “If a film runs well at the box office, it’s because of the craft and content. Not because of who has acted in it,” he grins.

In Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru, Prakash plays a boy-next-door. “We completed the film in 70 days, and shot extensively in Malaysia, Puducherry and Chennai. It’s a modern day road film-love story. It is an entertaining, energetic, exciting role. That’s what I have always wanted to reflect and director Rajesh’s characters are also like that,” he says.

The film had a great team of technicians and assistant directors. “I usually try to balance between what I am and what the script demands. We have given our best and I am sure this will be a super hit film,” he smiles.

Though he looks like a college student, he’s open to experimenting with fresh ideas and new avenues. He works with people who are ready to wait for him. “I had to shed certain inhibitions to present myself as an actor. I am extremely choosy with films. At the same time, I am not compromising on my career as a music ian,” he shares.

Talking about his upcoming projects, he says, “Bruce Lee is ready for release, and I am doing a film with Rajeev Menon where AR Rahman is composing the music. Then, I have Adangadhey with Sarath Kumar and Mandira Bedi. We just started shooting for it and recently completed a few portions in Varanasi. Besides these, there’s 4G, which will show me in a completely different avatar. It’s a full-on fantasy script.” Prakash knows what audience expects from him. “I want to be a part of hit films. There are no two ways about it. I have lost the fear of camera and I am definitely getting better with every film,” he chuckles.
